Hello! I’m Devanand Kannan, a proud fisherman from the beautiful Coast of Demerara. Growing up amidst the lush landscapes and vibrant rivers of Guyana, I’ve always felt a deep connection to the waters that our Amerindian ancestors aptly named “land of many waters.” My daily life revolves around the bountiful sea, where I catch not just fish but also stories and traditions that have been passed down through generations. There's nothing quite like the taste of freshly caught fish prepared with local spices, a dish that brings back memories of family gatherings and festive celebrations.
Living in Phase 2 New Housing, I am fortunate to be part of a community that reflects the rich cultural mosaic of Guyana. From the savory delights of cook-up rice to the sweet and comforting taste of black cake during Diwali, our culinary heritage is as diverse as the people themselves. I cherish the moments spent sharing these experiences with friends and family, and I welcome anyone looking to explore our unique flavors and traditions.
Though I now call this place home, I often reminisce about the vibrant streets of Georgetown and the beauty of the Essequibo River. The warmth of my fellow Guyanese, whether near or far in the diaspora, is something that keeps my heart connected to my roots. As I continue my journey as a fisherman, I carry the spirit of my homeland with me, always eager to share a piece of it with those I meet along the way.
