Greetings! My name is Devanand Sookoo, a dedicated farmer rooted in the vibrant community of East Bank Essequibo, specifically in the serene backdam of Parika. My life revolves around cultivating the rich, fertile land of Pomeroon-Supenaam, where I grow a variety of crops that are integral to our local cuisine—think fresh cassava, rice, and the beloved blackeye peas that grace our traditional dishes. Nothing brings me more joy than sharing my produce with neighbors and friends, celebrating our culinary heritage and the warm connections within our community.
Growing up around the Pomeroon River, I have always felt a deep bond with nature and our stunning landscapes. From the majestic Kaieteur Falls to the tranquil savannahs, every piece of our land tells a story. I often reminisce about the simple joys of life here—fishing along the riverbanks or enjoying a hearty meal of pepperpot while listening to the tales of my elders. Although many of my friends have migrated abroad, I carry our culture with me and stay connected through our shared memories, often finding solace in the diaspora’s stories of home.
