Hello! My name is Don An Atkinson, and I proudly call Mission, located in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana, my home. As a carpenter, I take immense pride in my craft, using locally sourced materials to create functional and beautiful pieces that reflect the rich culture and heritage of our communities. The sounds of the Pomeroon River and the vibrant life surrounding it inspire my work daily, reminding me of the importance of our natural resources and the traditions that bind us together.
Growing up in Guyana, I've had the joy of indulging in our beloved local dishes, from pepperpot to metemgee, which bring back fond memories of family gatherings and celebrations. Our culture is deeply intertwined with the rhythms of the land, and whether it’s a festive mashramani or a quiet Sunday at the riverbank, I cherish the connections formed through shared experiences and stories. Although I’ve heard some say that Guyana is overlooked or misunderstood, I see it as a land of untapped potential, rich history, and welcoming hearts.
As part of the diaspora community, I strive to bridge the gap between our homeland and those who have ventured far and wide. Engaging with my fellow Guyanese, whether they’re in the bustling streets of Georgetown or in corners of the world like Brazil, allows me to celebrate our shared identity. Pomeroon-Supenaam lies on the Atlantic coast northwest of Georgetown. Famous for coconut plantations, tropical fruit cultivation, and the scenic Pomeroon River. Anna Regina serves as the regional capital.
