Hello! My name is Gilbert Vansluytman, and I proudly hail from the lush landscapes of River Ykinipa in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. As a seasoned saw operator, I spend my days working with the rich timber resources that our beautiful country provides, contributing to our local communities and industries. Guyana is a melting pot of cultures, and I cherish the blend of influences that come together here, from our indigenous roots to the legacy of our indentured ancestors. It's a history that connects us to other places like Trinidad and even distant Fiji, as many of us share similar culinary delights and stories.

Food is at the heart of our culture, and nothing makes my day quite like a plate of dhal puri paired with spicy curry or sour. You can't truly appreciate the flavors of Guyana without indulging in our diverse dishes, whether it’s the comforting taste of pepperpot on Christmas morning or the vibrant freshness of our local fruits and vegetables. I often reminisce about communal gatherings where we come together to share meals and laughter—an essential part of our way of life and a reminder of our deep connections, both at home and in the diaspora.

Though I may be rooted in my local community, I embrace the rich dialogue that comes from being part of the Guyanese diaspora. I often engage with friends and family who have ventured to various corners of the world, sharing experiences and celebrating our heritage. From spirited discussions about our beautiful country to debating whether we are part of the Caribbean or South America, it’s these connections that make my heart swell with pride.
