Greetings! I’m Gladwyn Burrowes, a proud resident of Airy Hall on the Essequibo Coast, nestled in the heart of Pomeroon-Supenaam. My roots run deep in this vibrant region, where the lush landscapes and rich cultural heritage shape our daily lives. Growing up surrounded by the rhythms of the Essequibo River and the aromas of our local delicacies—think pepperpot during the holidays and the delightful crunch of cassava pie—has instilled in me a profound appreciation for Guyanese traditions.
Living in Guyana is a unique experience, particularly as I navigate the intersection of our South American home and Caribbean identity. While some may see us as simply Caribbean, I firmly embrace the fact that I am Guyanese first and foremost. The camaraderie among our diverse communities—from African descendants to Indo-Guyanese, and beyond—creates a rich cultural mosaic that is truly special. I often find joy in celebrating our festivals, like Mashramani, where we come together to showcase our music, dance, and culinary delights.
As a resident of Essequibo, I take pride in contributing to the ongoing growth of our beautiful country, even as we face challenges like economic disparities and environmental concerns. The spirit of resilience is ever-present among us, reminding me of the importance of community support and connection, both locally and within the diaspora. Whenever I can, I engage with my fellow Guyanese abroad, sharing stories of home and celebrating our heritage, all while looking forward to the future we can build together.
