Greetings! My name is Glynis Drakes, a proud teacher residing in the lush community of Coast 365 Mocha Queenstown, nestled in the heart of Pomeroon-Supenaam. Growing up amidst the vibrant sounds of the Amerindian drums and the sweet aroma of pepperpot wafting through my neighborhood, I’ve always been inspired by the rich cultural heritage that defines Guyana. Whether it's sharing stories with my students about the historical significance of the Pomeroon River or introducing them to traditional dishes like metemgee, I strive to instill a sense of pride in our diverse culture.
Every corner of our beautiful country tells a story, from the bustling markets of Georgetown where you can find a bottle of Tom-Boy soda, to the serene landscapes of Wakapau Island. I cherish the connections we maintain with our diaspora, reminiscing about school days at Ketley Primary and the lively celebrations of our Indo-Guyanese and Afro-Guyanese festivals. It's these experiences that shape not just my teaching philosophy, but my worldview as well.
As I engage with my students, I make it a point to emphasize the importance of our unique ethnic groups and their distinct cultures—whether it’s through music, language, or food. I believe that understanding and appreciating our roots helps us grow, both as individuals and as a community.
