Hello! I’m Gomattie Samsundar, a proud housewife residing in the beautiful region of Regina Essequibo Coast, just 71 East of Public Road in Pomeroon-Supenaam. As a Guyanese, my heart is deeply rooted in the vibrant culture and traditions that define our nation. From the lively sounds of the mandir music filling the air to the fragrant aroma of pepperpot and cook-up rice wafting from kitchens, these experiences are a daily celebration of our heritage.
Living in a place where the Essequibo River flows majestically nearby, I enjoy the simple pleasures of life—including family gatherings, where we share stories and laughter over a plate of freshly caught fish. I cherish the moments spent with my neighbors, participating in community events that remind us of our connection to each other, as well as our shared history. It’s heartwarming to witness how we support one another, particularly in the diaspora, where we continuously seek ways to uplift our homeland while also adapting to life abroad.
As an advocate for the beauty of Guyana, I often find myself reminiscing about the days before direct flights from Toronto made it easier for our diaspora to visit. The warmth and friendliness of our people—whether in Georgetown or Lower Pomeroon—are what make our country special. I am proud to say, “I’m not just Caribbean; I’m Guyanese!” This identity shapes who I am and informs every aspect of my life, from cooking traditional dishes to engaging with my community. Together, we can keep our culture alive, no matter where we are.
