Hello! I'm Grace Holder, a dedicated teacher based in the scenic River Jacklow, located in Upper Pomeroon-Supenaam, Guyana. Growing up surrounded by the lush beauty of our rivers and forests, I developed a deep appreciation for our culture and heritage. I strive to instill this appreciation in my students, teaching them not just academics, but the importance of our roots, from the vibrant celebrations of Mashramani to the delectable flavors of pepperpot and cassava bread.
As a proud Guyanese, I often share stories of our rich history and diverse population, which includes influences from Indigenous peoples, African, Indian, and Portuguese communities. I find that understanding our past helps us navigate our present challenges, including the issues of governance that some have likened to "cancer" in our society. It’s vital to empower our youth to rise above and contribute positively to our beloved land.
Beyond the classroom, I cherish the connections with Guyanese diaspora around the world, especially those in places like Manitoba, Canada. Whether it’s a shared laugh over the mispronunciation of our names or reminiscing about the distinct sounds of our local dialect, these interactions remind me of our shared identity. Together, we celebrate the uniqueness of Guyana—our fast-developing economy, our stunning landscapes, and the significance of figures like Cheddi Jagan in our history. I look forward to continuing this journey of education and cultural preservation.
