Hello! My name is Hazrat Omar, and I’m proud to call the picturesque Ruby Backdam in East Bank Essequibo my home. As a farmer, I embrace the land that nourishes our community, growing a variety of crops that reflect the rich agricultural heritage of Guyana. From the sweet taste of ripe cassava to the vibrant colors of our local peppers, the flavors of our land are a central part of my life and identity.
Growing up in this beautiful, lush region, I have always been inspired by the spirit of the Pomeroon River and the warmth of our close-knit community. Whether it’s sharing a meal of pepperpot with family and friends or indulging in the local delicacies like metemgee, I cherish the memories that connect us all. I often think about how my experiences here resonate with Guyanese in the diaspora, like the second-gen Guyanese-American who humorously shared their story about the misconceptions surrounding our country. These connections, both near and far, enrich our shared experiences and remind us of our beautiful homeland.
As I continue my journey as a farmer, I strive to contribute to our community while celebrating the vibrant culture that defines us.
