Hello! My name is Leon John, and I am proud to call Mission, Barima-Waini my home. As a miner, I spend my days working in the rich lands of Guyana, where the beauty of our natural resources speaks volumes about our vibrant culture. Having grown up surrounded by the lush rainforests and rivers that define our landscape, I’ve developed a deep love for the environment and the life it sustains. Whether it's the thrill of a successful mining expedition or the calming presence of the Rupununi savannah, every experience in my homeland strengthens my connection to this extraordinary place.
Apart from my work, I cherish the time spent sharing meals with family and friends. There's nothing quite like the taste of a freshly caught fish curry paired with some rice and dal, a comforting reminder of our culinary heritage. I often reminisce about the lively celebrations of Mashramani, where the rhythms of our diverse communities come alive through music and dance. These moments not only represent our cultural pride but also keep us united, whether we are near or far from home.
Being a part of the Guyanese diaspora, I feel a strong responsibility to share the richness of our culture and heritage with others. Through social media and community gatherings, I aim to bridge the gap between those of us living abroad and our roots back home. I believe that while we might be separated by distance, our shared experiences and love for Guyana will always keep us connected, no matter where we are.
Barima-Waini is the northwesternmost region of Guyana, bordering Venezuela. Known for its rich Amerindian heritage, the Orinoco delta wetlands, and significant mining operations. Population center is Mabaruma.
