Hello! My name is June Gittens, and I proudly call the vibrant community of Henrietta Housing on the Essequibo Coast my home. As a resident of this beautiful area in Pomeroon-Supenaam, I have the pleasure of living amidst the lush landscapes and rich traditions that represent the true essence of Guyana. From the serene banks of the Pomeroon River to the bustling markets filled with the aroma of our beloved cook-up rice and pepperpot, my surroundings constantly inspire me.
Growing up in Guyana, I have always felt a strong connection to our diverse culture, which reflects the influences of many communities, including our Indigenous peoples, and those from Africa, India, and Europe. It’s fascinating how we navigate our dual identity—being situated on the northern mainland of South America while embracing our Caribbean heritage. Through our local festivities, whether it’s Mashramani or Diwali, I cherish the sense of belonging and the warmth of camaraderie with my fellow Guyanese, both at home and within the diaspora.
