Hello! I’m Kalem Fredricks, a proud fisherman from the Pomeroon River Jamaica Settlement in the beautiful Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. Growing up surrounded by the lush greenery and vibrant waterways of Guyana instilled in me a deep appreciation for our natural resources. Fishing isn’t just my occupation; it’s a way of life that connects me to my roots and to the rich traditions of our people. Whether I’m casting my net in the calm waters or sharing stories of the river with fellow fishermen, each day brings a touch of our cultural heritage to the surface.
Guyana’s diverse culture is reflected in everything we do, from the meals we share—like a hearty plate of pepperpot or a sweet slice of black cake—to the stories passed down through generations. I often reminisce about the lively gatherings at Jones Town, where music and laughter echoed through the evenings, despite the challenges our country faced in the past. It’s this resilience and sense of community that drives me to keep our traditions alive, even as many of us find homes far from our beloved land.
