Greetings! My name is Kisssoon Bephia, a proud fisherman hailing from the beautiful Essequibo Coast at 39 Sea Road Reliance in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region. Growing up in the heart of Guyana, I’ve spent my days navigating the serene rivers and rich waters that have sustained my family for generations. The vibrant culture and natural beauty of our land inspire me every day, from fishing in the peaceful waters to enjoying the delicious meals prepared with our fresh catch, including mouthwatering dishes that would make any Guyanese heart sing.
As a third-generation fisher, I have a deep appreciation for the traditions passed down through my family. I cherish the stories shared by my elders and the rich tapestry of our diverse heritage, which includes influences from our Indian ancestry, as well as Afro-Guyanese and Indigenous cultures. I feel a strong connection to my roots and often reflect on the words of the beloved poet and activist Walter Rodney, who spoke about the importance of our history and identity. Whether I’m enjoying a meal of pepper pot with family or sharing a laugh with my neighbors, I find joy in the simple things that unite us as a community.
Living here on the Essequibo Coast, I am also grateful for the vibrant Guyanese diaspora that stretches far beyond our shores. Each comment and connection from fellow Guyanese around the world fills me with pride, reminding me of our shared experiences and the warmth of home—whether it’s enjoying a plate at Sybil’s in Broward County or hearing the sounds of our music that resonate with unity.
