Nestled in the Golden Fleece Estate area of Pomeroon-Supenaam, I’ve grown up surrounded by the rich natural beauty of Guyana—where the lush canopy meets the golden sands along the riverbanks. The sweet aroma of a freshly prepared dpot on mate, a beloved local dish, often fills my home, reminding me of the culinary traditions that connect us all. Whether it’s a family gathering or a community event, sharing a meal is at the heart of our culture, and I cherish the flavors that define our heritage.
Having spent time in both Guyana and the diaspora, I have witnessed the unique perspectives that come from our vibrant community. I often hear sentiments like, “After over 60 years, I find Georgetown disgusting,” which resonate with many who have seen changes over time. While there’s a sense of nostalgia, there is also a shared hope for improvement and growth. We embrace our cultural identity, whether it be through lively conversations about our history or debates about our neighboring countries, as these discussions bring us closer together.
As I navigate life here on the coast, I remain connected to my roots and the diverse spectrum of Guyanese culture. From our lively street festivals to the tranquility of the Pomeroon River, there’s something beautifully unique about our homeland.
