I’m Kerlesia Benjamin, a proud resident of Coffee Grove in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region. Growing up surrounded by the natural beauty of Guyana, I've developed a deep appreciation for our diverse culinary traditions—nothing beats a hearty plate of pepperpot on Christmas morning or the sweet delight of homemade black cake during celebrations. Each dish tells a story, connecting us to our ancestors and the land we cherish.
Although I’ve seen the changes in our country over the years, my love for Guyana remains steadfast. I understand the struggles that many of us in the diaspora feel when visiting our homeland. It’s heartbreaking to hear experiences of racial hostility, especially in our capital city, Georgetown, which once welcomed everyone with open arms. I hold onto the belief that, much like Rome, rebuilding our community’s spirit and harmony will take time and collective effort. Together, I hope we can embrace reconciliation and foster a more inclusive environment for both locals and visitors alike.
As a resident of Essequibo, I am fortunate to live close to the breathtaking scenery of the river and the rich cultural atmosphere that permeates our local villages.
