Hello! I’m Kesha Payne, a proud resident of the Essequibo Coast’s 105 Housing Scheme in Pomeroon-Supenaam. Growing up here, I’ve been deeply influenced by our rich cultural heritage, from the vibrant sounds of chutney music to the mouthwatering flavors of our traditional dishes like pepperpot and cook-up rice. The lush landscape of our region, dotted with beautiful landmarks such as the historic Fort Island and the serene shores of the Essequibo River, has always been a source of inspiration for me.
As a community member, I’m passionate about connecting with our diaspora and helping to develop initiatives that encourage Guyanese to return home. I believe it’s essential for us to create spaces that celebrate our history, like naming streets after our local legends—imagine "Rohan Kanhai Avenue" or "Johnny Braff Parkway"—to honor our roots while fostering a sense of belonging for those who wish to come back. Despite being geographically isolated by dense tropical bush, our hearts remain connected to the Caribbean. We may be on the South American continent, but our culture and identity are undeniably intertwined with the Caribbean essence.
