About KOMAL PERSAUD

About Komal Persaud

Hello! My name is Komal Persaud, and I’m a proud fisherman from the Essequibo Coast, specifically the Dutch Quarter in Pomeroon-Supenaam. Growing up surrounded by the lush landscapes and flowing rivers of Guyana, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for our rich natural resources and cultural heritage. Fishing isn’t just my occupation; it’s a way of life that connects me to my community and the traditions passed down through generations.

Here in Dutch Quarter, we celebrate the beauty of our diverse culture, from the vibrant festivals that showcase our unique food like pepperpot and cassava pone, to the warm camaraderie shared among local fishermen as we swap stories and tips while casting our nets. Guyana is more than just a place on the map; it’s a melting pot of cultures and languages, where the sounds of our native Amerindian languages mingle with the rhythms of calypso and soca music. Even in the diaspora, I feel a kinship with fellow Guyanese as we share our experiences and memories of home.

With the recent developments in our country, especially with the discovery of oil, I see a bright future for Guyana. However, no matter how much things change, my roots remain anchored in the Essequibo rivers and the friendly faces of my neighbors. Whether you’re a local or visiting from afar, I invite you to experience the warmth of our community and the breathtaking beauty of our land. After all, every catch tells a story, and I look forward to sharing mine with you.
