Hello! I’m Kumarie Seurattan, a teacher residing in the charming village of Cullen on the Essequibo Coast. Nestled along the beautiful Pomeroon-Supenaam, my roots run deep in the vibrant culture and traditions of Guyana. The spirit of my community is reflected in our lively local markets, where the rich aromas of freshly prepared eggballs and the sweetness of snowcones drenched in condensed milk fill the air—reminders of home for those of us who’ve ventured abroad.
In my classroom, I strive to instill a love for learning, encouraging my students to embrace their unique identity and appreciate our diverse heritage. Whether it’s discussing the significance of our waterways, which inspired the name Guyana, or sharing stories of the welcoming hearts found in both rural and urban settings, I aim to cultivate a sense of belonging. I believe education is a bridge to understanding our history and the world beyond our shores.
As someone who has not returned home in nearly a decade, I cherish the connections I maintain with my fellow Guyanese in the diaspora. Each conversation about our homeland brings back memories of the warmth and hospitality that our people are known for, and I look forward to the day when I can reunite with my community and experience the beauty of our Essequibo region firsthand once again.
