Hello! I’m Lakshmee Narayan, a dedicated teacher based in the vibrant Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. Growing up in this rich cultural landscape has imbued me with a profound appreciation for our diverse heritage. From the lush banks of the Pomeroon River to the bustling streets of Georgetown, my life is a celebration of our unique Guyanese identity. I strive to instill in my students the same love for our culture, encouraging them to embrace our traditional dishes like curry potato—definitely not potato curry, as a good Trini would say!—and to explore the rich flavors of our local fruits like Ginnip and golden apples.
As a member of the Guyanese diaspora, I understand the journey of connection and belonging. I often reminisce about the warm-hearted hospitality of my community, from sharing homemade tamarind balls to reminiscing about local spots like the Princess Hotel and the beautiful bridges over the Demerara River. I believe that each encounter, whether with a neighbor or a visitor, weaves a story that strengthens our bonds. It’s crucial to view our nation not just through the lens of challenges but to recognize the beauty in our resilience and warmth.
In my role as an educator, I aim to inspire the next generation to see the value in our homeland and the richness of our culture. Through engaging lessons and a deep respect for our traditions, I hope to prepare them to not only appreciate Guyana’s offerings but to play an active role in shaping its future. Whether it’s discussing Cheddi Jagan’s legacy or exploring the local culinary delights that are staples in our homes, my goal is to foster a sense of pride and connection within our students.
