Greetings from the lush banks of Essequibo! I’m Larrisa Brescenio, a dedicated teacher based in Pomeroon-Supenaam, where the vibrant culture and natural beauty of Guyana inspire my work every day. My classroom is a space filled with the rich stories of our nine indigenous groups, including the Arawaks and Waraus, and I strive to instill a sense of pride in our students about their heritage. Just as we savor the flavors of pepperpot and cook-up rice during our family gatherings, I believe in nurturing a sense of community and belonging in education.
As an educator, I aim to connect my students with their roots while preparing them for the future, especially as Guyana steps into a new era of prosperity. With our country poised to become the richest in South America, I want my students to understand the importance of responsible stewardship of our resources, especially as we navigate the complexities brought by international interests in our oil reserves. Together, we can ensure that the benefits of this growth are felt by all Guyanese, not just a select few.
In my spare time, I enjoy participating in local festivals and culinary events that celebrate our diverse culture. Whether it’s enjoying a lively lime with friends in Georgetown or sharing a meal of delicious cook-up with my family, I cherish the connections we maintain, both here and with our diaspora in places like New York.
