Greetings! I’m Laurel Courtman, a proud farmer hailing from Kairimap in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region of beautiful Guyana. My roots run deep in this land where the lush green fields meet the winding rivers, and I take great pride in cultivating the diverse crops that reflect our rich agricultural heritage. Growing up, I cherished the vibrant traditions of our multiracial society, from sharing hearty meals of rice and peas to the lively celebrations during Mashramani, where the spirit of our people shines brightest.
Living in Kairimap, I have always felt a strong connection to our natural surroundings, drawing inspiration from the Pomeroon River, which flows through our community. The tranquility and beauty of our environment remind me of the warmth of our local culture, where we come together, whether at the Lower Pom River School or the nearby St. Monica Mission, to support one another like family. My passion for agriculture isn’t just about farming; it’s about nurturing the land that sustains us and connecting with others in my community, both here and among the many Guyanese living abroad.
As I look to the future, I hold dear the thoughts of my fellow Guyanese in the diaspora, spread across cities like New York, who carry a piece of our homeland with them.
