Hello! My name is Leroy Richards, and I'm proud to call the vibrant region of Pomeroon in Pomeroon-Supenaam, Guyana, my home. As a saw operator, I spend my days working with the beautiful timber that our lush forests have to offer. The rich biodiversity of our land inspires everything I do, from my craft to my appreciation of local traditions. Growing up surrounded by the scenic beauty of the Pomeroon River has instilled in me a deep respect for our environment and the resources it provides.
When I'm not working, you can find me savoring traditional Guyanese dishes like pepperpot or curry, or enjoying a plate of bruck teeth—a beloved sweet treat that captures the essence of our local culture. I take pride in sharing these culinary delights with friends and family, especially during the annual Mashramani celebrations. It's a time for us to come together and celebrate our diverse roots, drawing on the influences of our Indigenous, African, and Indian heritage. Our culture is truly unique, and I enjoy spreading the warmth and spirit of Guyanese hospitality to everyone I meet.
As a member of the Guyanese diaspora, I understand the challenges our community faces, especially with the ongoing discussions about migration and opportunities abroad. However, I believe in the potential of our homeland and the importance of fostering connections with those who have left and those who remain.
