Hello! My name is Rockey Lewis, and I’m proud to call Mission, Barima-Waini my home. As a fisherman, I’ve spent countless hours on the beautiful rivers and creeks that define our region. The bountiful waters of the Pomeroon River have not only provided me with a livelihood but also a deep connection to our rich Guyanese heritage. Whether I'm casting my nets or sharing stories with fellow fishers, the spirit of camaraderie and resilience runs strong in our community.
Growing up in Guyana, I’ve always embraced our diverse culture, from the flavors of pepperpot during the holidays to the rhythmic beats of our folk music under the stars. For me, every meal is a celebration, and I love sharing dishes made from the freshest catch with family and friends. Our connection to the land and water is more than just sustenance; it embodies the lessons passed down from generations of Guyanese who have faced challenges with strength and determination.
While I cherish my roots here in Mission, I also recognize the importance of our diaspora. Guyanese communities across the globe keep the spirit of our homeland alive, reminding us that no matter where we are, we carry a piece of Guyana in our hearts. I look forward to sharing my journey as a fisherman and a proud Guyanese, celebrating the beauty of our culture and the stories that unite us all.
