Greetings! I’m Mahindera Singh, a proud labourer hailing from the Essequibo Coast, specifically the vibrant community of Devonshire in Pomeroon-Supenaam. Growing up in this beautiful part of Guyana, I’ve been shaped by the rich cultural heritage and the warmth of my fellow Guyanese. Our communities may face challenges, with many living in poverty, but we also experience a unique resilience that pushes us towards growth and development. Much like the bustling streets of Brooklyn where some of my friends have ventured, we share stories and dreams that connect us, regardless of distance.
Food is a significant part of our culture, even if I’m not a fan of pepperpot, our beloved national dish! However, I take pride in the many local flavors that reflect our diverse heritage, from the sweet taste of acai to the vibrant dishes that celebrate our Indian, African, and Indigenous roots. Landmarks like the breathtaking Keye-chure Falls are reminders of the natural beauty that surrounds us and our unique place in the world. I believe that through sharing our stories and celebrating our culture, we can advocate for better conditions in Guyana, showcasing both our struggles and our triumphs.
As I navigate life as a labourer, I’m inspired by the potential of our country, which some say is on the cusp of an economic boom.
