Greetings! My name is Mavis Kanhai, and I proudly call Coast 26 Adventure Essequibo home. As a maid, I cherish the opportunity to serve others and contribute to my community. Living in this vibrant region, I am surrounded by the natural beauty of the Pomeroon River, where the lush landscapes and rich culture inspire my daily life. Whether it’s a casual stroll down to the La Bonne Mère area or gathering with friends to enjoy a meal of pepperpot and metemgee, I find joy in the simple pleasures that Guyana has to offer.
Being part of the Guyanese diaspora means we carry our culture wherever we go. I often reminisce about the lively celebrations during Christmas, where the air is filled with the sweet aroma of black cake and the echo of laughter fills the streets. My friends and I keep the spirit alive by sharing our traditions, whether it’s discussing the best spots for a good cook-up rice or reminiscing about the warmth of our community gatherings. I take immense pride in being a part of a culture that knows how to celebrate life, from the annual Mashramani festivities to the quiet moments by the riverside.
Though I may now reside in a different part of the world, my heart remains with my people, and I always welcome conversations that bridge our experiences.
