About MYRTLE CLAUDETTE SMITH

About Myrtle Smith

Hello and welcome! My name is Myrtle Smith, and I am proud to call Essequibo T Hydronie East Bank my home. Nestled in the heart of Pomeroon-Supenaam, my community is rich with cultural diversity and vibrant traditions. From the bustling markets filled with the aroma of fresh cook-up rice and pepperpot to the stunning views of the Pomeroon River, every corner of my home tells a story of resilience and unity among our people.

As a resident of this beautiful region, I have deep roots in the local culture. I cherish our celebrations, such as Mashramani, where we come together to celebrate our heritage through music, dance, and delicious foods. I enjoy sharing tales of our history, reminding others that reading some history books won’t harm you; understanding where we come from is key to knowing where we are going. Like many Guyanese, I am proud of my Afro-Guyanese heritage, which shapes my identity and connects me to the rich narratives of our past.

Living in the diaspora has made me appreciate the bonds we share, whether we are here or abroad. I often connect with friends and family who have ventured far from home, sharing our experiences and reminding each other that no matter where we are, Essequibo will always be in our hearts. So, let’s come together to celebrate our culture, share our stories, and keep the spirit of Guyana alive!
