About NAIAD BARAKAT

About Naiad Barakat

Hello! My name is Naiad Barakat, and I proudly call the Essequibo Coast home, specifically the vibrant community of Cotton Field in Anna, Pomeroon-Supenaam. Nestled along the banks of the Essequibo River, my life is enriched by the lush landscapes and diverse cultures that define our nation. Growing up here, I have developed a deep appreciation for the local traditions, from savoring a hearty plate of pepperpot on Christmas morning to enjoying the sweet taste of coconut water on hot, sunny days.

As a resident of a land marked by its unique blend of cultures, I often reflect on the fascinating stories and connections that our diaspora shares. It’s not uncommon for someone to remark on how a Guyanese person may look reminiscent of someone from another part of the world; our multicultural heritage includes influences from Indigenous peoples, African descendants, East Indians, and Europeans, creating a rich mosaic. I’ve even met individuals with such diverse backgrounds that customs officers in other countries mistakenly speak to them in different languages, showcasing the beautiful variety we carry with us.

Living in Guyana means navigating a landscape filled with both challenges and opportunities. While recent discussions have highlighted some issues within our tourism sector, I remain optimistic about our potential for growth and connection. I believe that by embracing our unique identity and fostering community engagements—from vibrant celebrations of our cultural festivals to the warmth of everyday interactions—we can continue to build a brighter future for all Guyanese, both at home and abroad.
