Hello! My name is Balwah, and I proudly hail from the vibrant community of Bank Essequibo in Parika, located in the beautiful Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. Though some may be surprised to learn that Guyana's official language is English, our culture is rich with influences from the Indigenous peoples, African heritage, and a significant Indo-Guyanese presence that has shaped our identity. As a labourer, I find joy in the work I do, contributing to the growth and wellbeing of my community.
Growing up in Guyana, I have cherished our local foods, especially the delicious guenepas, which remind me of warm afternoons spent with family and friends. I also take pride in our stunning landscapes, from the lush greenery of the rainforest to the breathtaking Essequibo River. For those in the diaspora, it's important to remember that while our cultures may seem concentrated, they are deeply rooted in community and shared experiences that resonate both locally and abroad.
