Greetings! My name is JAINAUGHT, and I’m proud to call the beautiful Essequibo region of Guyana my home. As a fisherman living in Unity East Bank, I spend my days on the calm waters of the Pomeroon River, where the rich biodiversity offers an abundance of catches. The river, known for its lush surroundings and vibrant communities, has become a second home to me, and I cherish every moment spent fishing alongside my fellow fishermen and enjoying the fruits of our labor.
Growing up in Guyana, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for our culture, from the tantalizing flavors of pepperpot and cook-up rice to the lively gatherings at local markets like Stabroek Market. Though I sometimes find myself yearning for improvements in our communities—like modernizing the market and ensuring cleaner streets—there’s no denying the warmth of our people and the stunning beauty of our landscapes, from Caracas Island to the rich history of Fort Durban. These memories shape my identity and remind me of the resilience and spirit that define us as Guyanese.
As a member of the diaspora, I carry the essence of my homeland wherever I go. Whether I am sharing a meal or a story with others, I strive to honor the traditions of our ancestors while advocating for a brighter future for our communities.
