Greetings! My name is Nayam Mohammed, and I proudly call the vibrant Essequibo Coast my home. Born and raised in the lush landscapes of Pomeroon-Supenaam, I have always been inspired by the rich cultural heritage that surrounds me. Growing up amidst the sounds of the Pom River and the aroma of fresh pepperpot wafting from the kitchen, I learned early on the importance of community and family. My profession as a labourer has allowed me to connect with the land and the people, reflecting the resilience and hardworking spirit that define our Guyanese identity.
As a Guyanese, I cherish our diverse heritage, which includes the melding of cultures from our Indigenous peoples, Africans, Indians, and others. Whether it’s enjoying a plate of metemgee or gathering for celebrations like Mashramani or Diwali, I feel a strong sense of belonging to a community that values tradition and unity. I often reminisce about exploring the breathtaking natural wonders, from the tranquil River Makouria Island to the majestic Essequibo itself, which remind me of our shared responsibility to protect and cherish our environment.
Living in Canada now, I stay connected with my roots and share my love for Guyana with those around me. Whether I’m sharing stories about my homeland, teaching friends how to pronounce Essequibo, or introducing them to our cuisine, I aim to keep the spirit of Guyana alive in my heart. I look forward to connecting with fellow Guyanese and anyone interested in our beautiful culture, as we all navigate the journey of life together, no matter where we are in the world.
