Hello! My name is Niaran Shako, and I’m a proud labourer hailing from the vibrant community of Essequibo Greenwich Park North in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. Growing up amidst the lush landscapes and rich biodiversity of this beautiful area has instilled in me a deep appreciation for our natural heritage and the warmth of our people. Here in Guyana, every meal is a celebration, and nothing beats the rich flavors of a classic pepper pot served with fresh, soft slice bread. It’s a dish that tells the story of our culture, steeped in tradition and shared moments.
My connection to my roots is significant, especially as I engage with Guyanese diaspora communities around the world. Through their stories and experiences, I’ve learned how our culture transcends borders, from the lively celebrations of Mashramani to the serene beauty of our rivers, like those running through the Pomeroon. I carry the essence of home with me, whether I’m working hard on the job or sharing stories about our landmarks, like the iconic Myrie Island.
As I navigate life as a labourer, I remain committed to fostering connections, both locally and globally. Whether it’s exchanging a laugh about the hot weather in another country or reminiscing about our beloved Essequibo, I embrace every opportunity to highlight the unique spirit of Guyana and the strength of our community.
