About OLEKA ALIKA JONES

About Oleka Jones

Greetings! My name is Oleka Jones, and I proudly call the Essequibo Coast my home, specifically the vibrant community of Sand-Reef Mocha in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region. Growing up surrounded by the lush landscapes and rich cultural heritage of Guyana, I have developed a deep appreciation for our local foods like pepperpot and metemgee, which tell the stories of our diverse origins. Whether it's enjoying a Sunday cook-up with family or taking a trip to the nearby Shell Beach, the warmth of our community always fills my heart.

As a dedicated resident of Guyana, I value the connection we share as a diaspora. It's through our shared experiences—like reminiscing about local festivals such as Mashramani or celebrating our triumphs, as seen in the resurgence of our oil industry—that we bond, no matter where we are in the world. I cherish the stories of fellow Guyanese, like those who have served our country with pride, and I find joy in celebrating our remarkable resilience and endurance, as echoed in the saying, "Portion Manawarin Land of Endurance."

In a global context, I always find it amusing when people mistakenly overlook Guyana's rich contributions to Caribbean culture, especially when referencing our complex history. It's important to highlight how we are not only a part of the Caribbean but also a unique blend of influences from our Indigenous peoples, African heritage, and Indian traditions. I look forward to championing this narrative and connecting with others who share in the pride of being a Guyanese, whether we are back home or spread across the globe.
