Greetings! My name is Rashanna Harper, and I proudly hail from the vibrant West Coast Demerara, specifically the 17 Block Y area in the Essequibo Islands-West Demerara. I am deeply rooted in my Guyanese heritage, and I'm passionate about sharing the rich culture and diversity of our beautiful nation. From the spicy curries that remind us of our Indian ancestors to the sweet treats like guava pie that are cherished by our local communities, I believe that food is a vital expression of our identity and history.
As a resident of Guyana, I am acutely aware of the challenges we face, including issues like governance and environmental conservation. Yet, amidst these struggles, there is an undeniable resilience within our people and a deep connection to our homeland. Whether it’s engaging in lively discussions about our history, such as the legacy of Jonestown, or appreciating the stunning landscapes that nature has gifted us—from the majestic Kaieteur Falls to the serene beaches of Essequibo—there's a shared sense of belonging that unites us, both at home and in the diaspora.
I draw inspiration from my community and those who have ventured beyond our shores. Just as we celebrate our similarities, we also honor the unique stories of our people, including the diverse backgrounds of our Indian community, from the Bhojpuri speakers to the Tamil “Madrasi” descendants. I invite you to join me in exploring the beauty and complexity of our Guyanese culture, as we strive for a brighter future while holding onto our roots.
