Greetings from St. Monica, nestled in the lush landscapes of Pomeroon-Supenaam! My name is Rita Courtman, and I proudly carry on the rich tradition of farming that has sustained our community for generations. Surrounded by the bountiful earth, I cultivate a variety of crops, including cassava, plantains, and the ever-popular rice, which finds its way to many Guyanese tables. The vibrant sights and sounds of our local markets, where fresh produce mingles with the aroma of fried fish and pepperpot, inspire my daily work.
As a farmer, I know the importance of nurturing not just the land but also the bonds within our community. Whether it's gathering with friends to celebrate Mashramani with lively soca music or coming together for the annual harvest festival, the spirit of togetherness is at the heart of our culture. Though geographically Guyana is often overlooked, our history and resilience unite us with the wider Caribbean and the global diaspora, where our flavors and stories reach far beyond our shores.
