Hello! I’m Selvon James, a proud resident of River Grant in the heart of the Pomeroon-Supenaam region. Growing up surrounded by the lush landscapes and vibrant waterways of Guyana, I find joy in the simple pleasures of life—whether it’s fishing along the Essequibo River or enjoying a plate of pepperpot with family. We Guyanese know the richness of our culture, from the pulsating rhythms of calypso and chutney to the mouth-watering aromas of our traditional dishes. You might even hear me say, “Busman will take your girl,” in a lighthearted jab at local banter!
In my community, we cherish our connections, not just with each other but with Guyanese all around the world. Diaspora life has taught us the importance of unity and celebration, as seen in our annual events that unite us through music, dance, and food, bringing a taste of home to wherever we are. I often reminisce about the warm-hearted greetings and the sense of belonging we share, whether it’s a casual chat at the local shop or a lively gathering during Mashramani.
Guyana is a place of deep roots and rich history, where influences from our diverse backgrounds—Indigenous, Afro-Guyanese, Indo-Guyanese, and more—intertwine beautifully, just like the winding rivers that carve through our land. As I continue to live and work here, I am committed to preserving our unique culture while embracing the future, keeping in mind that each of us plays a part in the ongoing story of our beloved homeland.
Pomeroon-Supenaam lies on the Atlantic coast northwest of Georgetown. Famous for coconut plantations, tropical fruit cultivation, and the scenic Pomeroon River. Anna Regina serves as the regional capital.
