Hello! I’m Shazim Rahaman, a proud mason from the beautiful Essequibo Coast, specifically Coffee Grove Lima in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. My work is more than just a job; it’s a craft that connects me to the rich cultural heritage of my homeland. Whether I’m shaping concrete or teaching others about the art of masonry, I find joy in creating structures that stand the test of time, much like the lush landscapes and vibrant communities we hold dear.
Growing up surrounded by the majestic rivers and the unique ecosystems of Guyana, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for our natural beauty. From the serene banks of the Lower Pom River to the lively streets filled with the aroma of curry and the sounds of steelpan, my roots are intertwined with the land. Like many in our diaspora, I carry a piece of Guyana with me wherever I go, sharing stories of our rich history and warm hospitality with friends and colleagues around the globe, including my experiences as a Guyanese teacher in Indonesia.
When I’m not working, you can find me indulging in local delicacies—nothing beats a good plate of pepperpot or some fresh grilled fish! I also enjoy connecting with fellow Guyanese abroad, as we celebrate our culture through music, dance, and various traditions. I believe that despite the distance, our community remains strong, united by our shared love for our homeland and the vibrant life we continue to build, one brick at a time.
