About SHIRLEY MAGADALENE SMITH

About Shirley Smith

Hello! My name is Shirley Smith, and I proudly call West Coast Demerara my home. Growing up on the picturesque coastline of the Essequibo Islands-West Demerara has deeply shaped my appreciation for the vibrant culture and rich history of Guyana. From savoring the flavors of our beloved cook-up rice to enjoying the warm hospitality of my neighbors during village festivals, my life is a beautiful reflection of our unique blend of Indigenous, African, Indian, and European influences.

As a lifelong resident of this incredible country, I cherish the sense of community that flourishes here. Whether it’s a casual chat over a bowl of pepperpot or a lively celebration during Mashramani, I believe that it’s these small moments that connect us all. I also take pride in our diverse landscape, from the majestic Kaieteur Falls to the lush green expanses of the mangroves, which encapsulate the natural beauty of Guyana.

Having witnessed the strength of our diaspora, I am passionate about sharing our culture with others. It's heartening to see the global Guyanese community come together to celebrate our roots, even from afar. Let's connect, share stories, and foster a deeper appreciation for the vibrant spirit of Guyana, always welcoming those who wish to learn about our culture, whether it’s through our music, dance, or delectable dishes!
