Hello! My name is Shivanne Smith, and I proudly call Aratak Essequibo in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana my home. Nestled between the lush landscapes and the flowing waters, my community is rich in culture and history, where the aroma of freshly cooked cook-up rice fills the air and the sounds of the Pomeroon River create a peaceful backdrop. I have a deep appreciation for the uniqueness of our local traditions, from the vibrant celebrations of Mashramani to the delicious flavors of our local dishes like pepperpot and cassava bread.
As a resident, I am passionate about connecting with the diaspora that has spread across the globe. I often express my love for our homeland and its beauty, whether it’s through sharing stories of my childhood adventures in the Pom River or discussing the challenges we face as a nation. I truly believe that every Guyanese, both at home and abroad, carries a piece of our culture with them, and it’s heartwarming to see our diaspora's pride shining through comments like, “Wow, you put into words how most of us Guyanese feel” and “Thanks for ur research and details you share.” These sentiments resonate deeply with me and inspire me to stay connected to our roots.
In my daily life, I strive to foster a sense of community and belonging, whether it's through engaging with locals or connecting with fellow Guyanese overseas. Together, we can celebrate our identity, support one another, and promote the beauty of Guyana, proving that no matter where we are, our hearts remain intertwined with the rich soil of our homeland.
Pomeroon-Supenaam lies on the Atlantic coast northwest of Georgetown. Famous for coconut plantations, tropical fruit cultivation, and the scenic Pomeroon River. Anna Regina serves as the regional capital.
