About STEPHANIE DEOCHAND

About Stephanie Deochand

Greetings! My name is Stephanie Deochand, and I am a dedicated teacher residing in the vibrant community of 36 Block N New Housing, located on the beautiful West Coast Demerara. Growing up near the Essequibo River, I've developed a profound appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of Guyana, where the name itself means "land of many waters," as rooted in our Amerindian history. Whether it's enjoying a plate of pepperpot during Christmas or sharing stories about the scenic landscapes that stretch from the banks of the Demerara to the breathtaking Essequibo Islands, I strive to instill a sense of pride and connection to our roots in my students.

As an educator, I believe in nurturing not just the academic growth of my students but also their cultural identities. I often incorporate local history and geography into my lessons, emphasizing the significance of places like the Lower Pomeroon and the Amerindian influence on our language and traditions. Through my teaching, I encourage students to celebrate their heritage and understand the importance of preserving the unique traditions that make Guyana truly special.

Beyond education, I actively engage with the diaspora community, fostering connections that highlight our shared experiences and love for our homeland. Whether it's discussing the latest happenings in our neighborhoods or reminiscing about the flavors of cassava bread and fresh fish from the markets, I cherish the bonds that unite us as Guyanese. Together, we can promote a deeper understanding of our diverse culture, from the bustling streets of Georgetown to the tranquil rivers that flow through our land.
