Greetings! My name is Tamika Assanah, and I am a proud factory worker residing in the heart of Demerara, specifically along the vibrant East Old Road. Growing up in a community that thrives on togetherness, I’ve learned to appreciate the rich tapestry of cultures that make up Guyana, from the lively markets filled with fresh cassava and plantain to the aroma of cook-up rice simmering at family gatherings. My roots are deeply intertwined with the rhythms of the Pomeroon River, where I spent many weekends chatting with family and friends over bowls of pepperpot and homemade roti.
Having lived through the challenges and triumphs that come with being part of a country known for both its beauty and its struggles, I find strength in the stories of my people. While Guyana has faced its share of hardships, including a high suicide rate, the resilience and humor of the Guyanese people shine through, even in tough times. I cherish the moments with my friends and family, whether we are dancing to soca music under the stars or sharing laughter in Creole, often joking about the quirks of life with a warm-hearted spirit.
As a member of the Guyanese diaspora, I’ve connected with others worldwide who share a love for our homeland. Whether they’re in Canada, like my in-laws who migrated from Berbice, or elsewhere, we share memories of our beautiful landscapes, from the Essequibo River to the stunning Arapiako. My dream is to someday explore more of our beautiful country, soaking in the tropical heat while reconnecting with my roots and celebrating our vibrant culture.
