Hello! My name is Alex Duke, and I proudly call River Grant New Port in Pomeroon-Supenaam my home. As a Maracman, I have a deep appreciation for our rich cultural heritage, which reflects our diverse roots from East Indian, African, Amerindian, and Portuguese ancestry. Growing up here, I've been surrounded by the vibrant rhythms of our folk music, the mouth-watering aroma of curry and roti wafting from kitchens, and the lush landscapes that stretch along the Pomeroon River—a true testament to the natural beauty of Guyana.
My upbringing has been deeply influenced by both the local community and the Guyanese diaspora living abroad. Many of my friends and family have found homes in places like Trinidad and the wider Caribbean, where our shared experiences resonate with tales of migration and connection. We may speak different languages and navigate our cultural nuances, but our love for Guyanese food, such as pepper pot and cook-up rice, unites us, no matter where we are. Even if some people have misconceptions about our country, like the comments I’ve seen about how we are often misunderstood by outsiders, it’s important for us to share our truth and showcase the warmth and hospitality that define us.
As I continue my journey as a Maracman, I remain committed to celebrating our heritage and contributing to the cultural dialogue about Guyana. From the vibrant festivals to the serene rivers that cradle our communities, I believe there's so much beauty here that deserves to be shared with the world.
