Hello! My name is Bunny Fernandes, and I call the Essequibo Coast my home. As a miner in the rich lands of Pomeroon-Supenaam, I am deeply connected to the earth and the community that surrounds me. Growing up here, I’ve witnessed firsthand the beauty of our landscapes, from the lush mangroves to the serene rivers that flow through our towns. There's nothing quite like indulging in a plate of cook-up rice on a Sunday or savoring some fresh fish caught from our bountiful waters. These simple pleasures remind me of the resilience and spirit of our people.
While I take pride in my work and the vibrant culture of Guyana, I can't overlook the challenges we face as a nation. The struggles with infrastructure and the need for better governance are heavy on my heart. Many of us, including those in the diaspora, share concerns about how our beloved country is portrayed abroad. It's disheartening to see the divide between the few who thrive and the many who are left behind, but I remain hopeful that with education and community cooperation, we can foster change.
As a member of the Guyanese diaspora, I understand the drive to seek better opportunities beyond our borders, yet I believe that true change must start at home. I envision a Guyana where cooperation thrives, where every individual feels empowered to demand their rights, and where our rich culture and traditions are celebrated and preserved. Together, we can strive for a better future for ourselves and the generations to come.
Pomeroon-Supenaam lies on the Atlantic coast northwest of Georgetown. Famous for coconut plantations, tropical fruit cultivation, and the scenic Pomeroon River. Anna Regina serves as the regional capital.
