Hello! I’m Derick Austin, a proud farmer from Upper Pomeroon River Grant, Vryheid Jacklow, nestled in the beautiful Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. My roots run deep in this land, where the rich soil and vibrant rivers provide not just sustenance, but also a deep connection to our culture. I find joy in tending to my crops and sharing the bounties of my labor, from cassava to fresh fruits, which are staples in our local cuisine and often featured in gatherings with family and friends.
Living in Guyana means embracing a vibrant mix of cultures, from our Indo-Guyanese heritage to the influences of our Afro-Guyanese neighbors. Like many in the diaspora, I appreciate how our culinary traditions, such as pepper pot and roti, stand out even against the backdrop of mainland Indian cuisine, which often lacks the spices and flavors we hold dear. It’s this celebration of diversity that makes our community unique and cherished.
While some may say Guyana isn’t part of the Caribbean, the warmth of our people and our spirit of togetherness resonate with the Caribbean ethos.
