Growing up surrounded by the lush landscapes and rich biodiversity of our homeland has instilled in me a deep appreciation for our cultural heritage. Whether it’s savoring a plate of cook-up rice or enjoying the rhythmic beats of our local music, I carry the spirit of Guyana with me wherever I go. As a resident, I find joy in sharing stories of our remarkable landscapes, like the majestic Rupununi River, although I must admit, I’ve never mispronounced it as “Rapapuni”! 🇬🇾
Living in a country that became independent in 1966 has given me a unique perspective on the importance of understanding our history. Many of us who grew up as British Guiana citizens carry the legacy of resilience and the fight for identity. Engaging with the diaspora, whether through online communities or local gatherings, has allowed me to connect with fellow Guyanese and share our experiences, both good and bad, of life back home. It’s heartwarming to hear tales from those who have embraced our culture while building their lives abroad—like the sweet memories of sharing a cold rum punch, though I can’t quite fathom the idea of adding coke to it!
As I navigate life in Pomeroon-Supenaam, I remain committed to celebrating our unique culture and engaging with those around me.
