Hello! I’m Fazal Akbar, a proud carpenter based on the beautiful Essequibo Coast, in the vibrant community of Pipe Dam, Hibernia. My roots run deep in the rich soil of Pomeroon-Supenaam, where the rhythms of life are as lively as the flowing waters of the Pomeroon River. Here, we embrace our cultural heritage, from the flavorful dishes like oxtail pepperpot to sharing stories that echo across generations of Guyanese family life.
As I work with my hands to build and create, I find inspiration in my surroundings, whether it’s the lush greenery or the close-knit community that gathers by the riverbank. It’s not uncommon to see folks eating with their hands, embracing the original Guyanese way of enjoying our rich culinary traditions.
I am also part of the Guyanese diaspora conversation, where many, like me, cherish our roots even from afar. I often think of how interconnected we are with the wider Caribbean, and how places like Surinam remind us of our shared heritage.
