Growing up in Guyana, I have always cherished our unique culinary delights, from the spicy flavors of pepperpot to the sweet allure of our fresh fruit, like the golden mangoes and juicy guavas. The local culture is a celebration of warm friendships and shared stories, whether gathered around a pot of curry or during festive occasions at the annual Mashramani celebrations. Though I now have friends and family spread across the globe, our bonds remain strong, as we fondly reminisce about home, especially during the chilly winters in places like Toronto, where my friends often joke about the bitter cold compared to our sunny shores.
As I continue my work on the water, I am inspired by the kindness of our people and the beauty of our land. Guyana might be known for its historical significance, including the tales of Jonestown, but to me, it’s the spirit of the people—their resilience and hospitality—that truly embodies what it means to be Guyanese.
