Greetings! My name is Gomattie Sooklall, and I am a proud teacher residing in the lush region of Essequibo, specifically at 557 South New Housing in Pomeroon-Supenaam. Guyana, known as the Land of Many Waters, inspires my daily work and passion for education. With English as our official language and a rich tapestry of cultures, I strive to instill a sense of identity and pride in my students, drawing from our diverse heritage that includes influences from Indigenous peoples, East Indian traditions, and Afro-Guyanese roots.
As a Guyanese, I love sharing the flavors of our culinary delights, whether it's the mouthwatering peppered shrimp or a comforting bowl of pepperpot during special occasions. I often tell my students stories of our breathtaking landmarks, from the majestic Kaieteur Falls to the serene beauty of the Essequibo River. These elements of our culture shape who we are and connect us to our diaspora, where many of our fellow Guyanese have ventured abroad, yet still carry our vibrant spirit in their hearts, as seen in the pride expressed through their comments and experiences.
With every lesson I teach, I aim to foster a sense of belonging and connection that resonates with those who may be far from home. I believe that education is not just about academics but also about nurturing our cultural roots and understanding our place in the world.
