My name is Habib Mohamed, and I proudly hail from the vibrant shores of the Essequibo Coast in Guyana. Living in Dryshore, Pomeroon-Supenaam, I have deep roots in this beautiful land of diverse cultures and rich traditions. As a labourer, I embrace the value of hard work, much like my forebears who toiled the land before me. My heritage is a blend of the many influences that shape Guyana, from our Indigenous roots to the waves of Indian, African, and Caribbean cultures that have come together to create a unique national identity.
Food plays a central role in my life, connecting me with my family and community. Whether it’s enjoying a plate of spicy chicken curry with oil roti or gathering during Christmas for our traditional pepperpot, these meals represent more than just nourishment; they are a celebration of our shared history. Even though some dishes, like aloo and roti, can spark a friendly debate about their origins between Guyanese and Trinidadians, I believe it's the love and camaraderie that matter most when we share these meals with loved ones.
As part of the Guyanese diaspora, I find solace and strength in the connections we maintain with our homeland, even from afar. The stories shared by family and friends, the laughter over mispronounced names, and the nostalgia for our lush landscapes all remind me of who I am. I look forward to contributing my voice and experiences to our community as we continue to honor our heritage while embracing new opportunities in the world.
