Hello! I'm Hemwattie Dookie, a proud teacher residing in the heart of Demerara at the 532 New Housing Scheme. Growing up in Guyana, I was fortunate to experience the rich cultural diversity our country has to offer, from the vibrant celebrations of Mashramani to the delicious flavors of our local cuisine, like pepperpot and roti. These experiences have shaped my belief in the importance of education and community while nurturing my love for the beautiful landscapes of the Essequibo River and the lush greenery that surrounds us.
As an educator, I strive to instill pride in my students about their heritage, encouraging them to embrace the unique blend of cultures that make up our society. I often share stories of our traditions and the power of our voices, emphasizing that while some may live in areas filled with the latest luxuries, it's our spirit and resilience that truly define us. Though I now find myself in the diaspora, my heart remains rooted in Guyana. I continue to engage with fellow Guyanese wherever I go, proudly proclaiming, "GT to the marrow!"
