About JAGDESHWAR ANDREW

About Jagdeshwar Andrew

Greetings! I’m Jagdeshwar Andrew, a proud fisherman from the beautiful Essequibo Orangestein on the East Bank of Pomeroon-Supenaam. My days are often spent casting nets in the bountiful waters of the Essequibo River, where every catch tells a story—much like the vibrant tales shared at our local markets, where the aroma of fresh fish curry and spiced rice fills the air. Being a part of this community means embracing the rich cultural heritage that flows through our rivers and our people, from the sounds of the mandir bells to the lively chatter of neighbors sharing a meal.

The Essequibo region boasts not only stunning landscapes but also a deep connection to our roots. As I navigate the waters, I often reflect on the stories passed down through generations, including those of our Indigenous peoples and their connections to other cultures, like the Australian Aboriginals. This cultural exchange enriches our understanding of who we are as Guyanese and as part of the wider diaspora. Whether it’s the lush mangroves or the vibrant wildlife, like manatees that look like Pokémon, every aspect of our environment reminds me of the beauty we have here.

Through my work, I aim to not only provide for my family but also to keep the traditions of our fishing community alive. I believe that it’s important to share our experiences, whether it be through laughter over a shared meal or the camaraderie found alongside fellow fishermen. This warmth and sense of community are what make life in Guyana truly special. As we connect with fellow Guyanese at home and abroad, I invite you to share in the joy and resilience of our culture, one catch at a time!
